NOTE: This story was taken from the blog of Foundations Health leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of his facilities in different roles such as housekeeping, or as a nursing assistant, to bring A Culture of Care.

I spent the day at Tuscany Gardens -
our 123-bed facility in Pataskala. Brian Duval is the administrator there and is doing an incredible job building our Culture of Care and leading his team. I had the privilege of working with the absolutely incredible housekeeping and laundry team lead by Marcia Clouse.  Marcia has been at Tuscany Gardens for 10 years and the facility looks incredible. She and her team take pride in their work and it shows.

I worked alongside Lynn Brewer in housekeeping the first part of the day. Lynn loves to clean and she loves interacting with the residents and giving them a clean environment to live. Her interaction with the nursing staff and their communication was encouraging to witness. They all were working together as a team to pass along information for the benefit of their residents.

The second half of the day I got to send with Cindy Brewer in laundry. Cindy is 61 and began doing laundry in a nursing home at the age of seventeen. She actually began working in a nursing home at the age of fifteen in dietary but moved to laundry after a couple of years and absolutely loves working in laundry. Cindy comes up to just above my hips, is as skinny as a rail, and moves like a bolt of lightning. I told her she works really fast and she smiled and said, “You think I work fast, Marcia is twice as fast as me.” I told Cindy, “Well thank God I’m not working with her!” We laughed and got back after it.

I’ve always been amazed at how we send everything down to laundry and somehow, they manage to get everything washed and back up to the right person. It was great to see first hand how that process works.

We began by sorting the clothes and linens according to what they were and how the was setting they needed. The wash setting determines what chemicals are needed for that particular load. I had to laugh because when I wasn’t sorting it right, Cindy never said a word. She just went and got the items I put in the wrong bin and put them in the right bin. When I realized what she was doing I told her, “I’m not doing this right, am I?” She smiled in said, "That’s ok, you’ll get the hang of it.”

I loved every minute with the team at Tuscany. Their love and respect for Marcia were incredible. I told Marcia at the end that her team raved about her. Some of the things they said about her were; “She’s the best boss I’ve ever had,” “We love working for her,” “She always helps us when we need it,” “She always has our back.” Marcia responded as most great leaders do, by complimenting her team and praising them for what they do and how committed they are to the facility and the residents.

“We are not A TEAM because we work together.

We are A TEAM because we respect, trust, and care for each other.”

Thank-you Marcia and your entire team in housekeeping and laundry! I loved every minute with you and am proud to have been able to work alongside
you and see first hand the work you do to make the environment of our residents clean and safe.
